Foundations for Literacy Success

A 12-month PL and coaching program to help your school establish a consistent, evidence-informed literacy block

We know how hard it can feel to establish and maintain explicit, systematic literacy blocks.
You aren't on your own in your journey.

It's understandable to feel that everyone else has structured literacy established, embedded, and working like clockwork.  The reality is that most schools are currently working on establishing a literacy block.   Even with system-created PL and resourcing, many school leaders are feeling lost or unsure when it comes to creating a consistent, evidence-informed literacy block in their schools.   That's where we come in.

Where you might be now:

  • You may have adopted a phonics program (but instruction and outcomes are still variable)

  • You may have goals of being data-informed (but the tools and their place in decision-making are confusing)

  • Your team may be committed to your school's  bigger picture 'why' (but you are struggling to get everyone onboard with changes)

  • You may be following the popular advice (but don't feel like you are getting traction.

  • Your team may agree with explicit teaching in principle (but they are worried they are going to lose 'themselves' in their teaching)

Where you want to be:

  • You want to have a consistent literacy block where instruction responds to the needs of students

  • You want you and your team to feel confident using data to make decisions about instruction

  • You want to be able to bring your team along on the journey and have them be an active part of the development

  • You want to have certainty that you are doing the right thing and have outcomes equal the effort your team is putting in

  • You want your teachers to feel confident that they can still be themselves in their teaching while adopting an explicit approach

We all know that one-size fits all approached, one-off PL sessions and ready-made programs aren't enough

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: We already have a phonics program. What will this partnership do for us?

A: Foundations for Literacy Success is NOT about programs. We know that high-quality resources are helpful to teachers. They lighten cognitive load and get everyone moving in the same direction. If your school is using our curriculum resources (Resource Room, Reading Success in Action, or Spelling Success in Action), that’s great. If you aren’t, we’ll help you identify the strength of your existing approaches and make them better.

Q: How much time will we need to devote to this process?
A: The professional learning sessions will require 3 hours for the introductory module (perfect for a pupil-free day) and 8 x 1-hour sessions spaced across Terms 1-3.  Leaders will also have access to 6 personalised coaching sessions spaced across the twelve months of the program.  Additional planning and reflection time will further enhance your outcomes.

Q: Can JSE deliver the PL in person?

A: While we recognise the benefit of in-person work, we believe that in-person time is best spent in modelling, examining data, and directly coaching teams to make the critical decisions for success.  If you choose to add in-person visits to your program, we will create a bespoke plan to meet your school exactly where you are up to.

Q: How much does Foundations for Literacy Success cost?

A: We recognise the challenges of budget constraints. Foundations for Literacy Success is the same price as one in-person day of consultancy work or the cost of sending 3-4 team members to an outside day of professional learning.  Download a brochure here to learn about pricing.

What others have said about working with Jocelyn Seamer Education

A feedback email
Today I had a Principal and a teacher from another school pop in to see my literacy block. It was wonderful talking and reflecting on my 2-year SOR experience. They loved seeing how I have moved away from Guided Reading in a cost effective way.

My foundation students wrote a decodable sentence with the visitors today. To see them move from doing this orally to now being able to write a sentence is so exciting.
I want to thank you again. You have provided a wonderful way to go about this.

Our team has benefited so much

I am so grateful to be working with Jocelyn Seamer Education this year. With their knowledge, guidance, and support, we are creating a team of teachers who feel more confident to plan and deliver quality Literacy sessions to all our students. They have had to make some significant changes to their thinking and being able to work with JSE for a year has helped us to embed some of this change rather than just making superficial changes.

A huge thank you!

I just wanted to write and express my gratitude to you and say THANKYOU!

I discovered the Bus around 2 ½ years ago on Facebook and everything you posted just made so much sense.

Finding your page and doing your courses has quite literally enabled me to stay in this position and learn what I need to know to do the job properly.

The resources and videos are so great. Knowing I can go back at any time and refresh my knowledge with each new cohort is just fantastic. I'm gradually incorporating more sections from The Literacy Block in my K/2 class. I think by this time next year I'll have all components in full swing.

So, from the bottom of my heart, THANKYOU! Your down-to-earth, common-sense approach to everything teaching is what teachers need.
