Consistent outcomes are built around a shared vision of practice, not a program.
Over the past 5 years, schools have increasingly embraced evidence-based literacy instruction in the early years. However, upper primary teachers have been left with critical questions about how to effectively implement these practices. Feeling overwhelmed by the complexity of instructional decisions, many teachers and leaders are searching for clear, practical guidance. The Reading Success in the Upper Primary Years Teach Along provides a targeted, actionable roadmap for implementing evidence-aligned literacy practices that support every student's learning journey.
Whether you’re
- A year 3, 4, 5, or 6 teacher
- A beginning teacher looking for a way forward
- An experienced teacher who wants to refine your practice and build on what you already know
- A school leader or curriculum coach looking for practical, real-life ways to support your team to understand both the why and how of instruction
- A secondary teacher looking to improve reading fluency and comprehension for your students

How a Teach-Along Works
A Teach Along allows you to learn a little bit, teach a little bit, get some support, and refine. You can work at your own pace or follow along with the modules as they are run live. Either way, you will be supported by the terrific group of colleagues inside a private forum who are completing the Teach Along with you. Live sessions are delivered via Zoom. Recordings and all course materials are stored on our online platform, allowing you to review them at any time until December 31 2027.
This Teach Along course covers the what, why, and how of:
- Cognitive load theory, information processing, teaching for long-term memory retention, and explicit instruction
- Reading Fluency
- Reading Comprehension
- Vocabulary
- Background knowledge
- Using data to inform instruction
- Practical considerations when creating an evidence-aligned literacy block
This Teach Along will help you avoid common mistakes such as:
- Spending too little or too much time building word-level knowledge
- Unintentionally overloading our students' cognitive load as we implement rich-text reading
- Covering all of the bases, but doing it in a disjointed, disconnected way
- Using a one-size-fits-all approach to fluency development
- Overwhelming ourselves and our students by trying to pack too much into units and lessons
- Teaching reading and writing separately, creating inefficiencies in our literacy blocks, and making learning harder for students
- Using instructional and engagement techniques to 'tick the box' rather than to achieve an outcome
- Throwing the 'baby out with the bathwater' in the shift to evidence-aligned instruction
- Taking the discussion, interaction, engagement, and student voice out of instruction as we attempt to embrace explicit teaching
- Pulling back on responding to our students in an attempt to create consistency
- Relying on PowerPoints or programs to make instructional decisions

Frequently Asked Questions
Burning Questions That Others Have Asked About Participating in a Teach Along:
I completed the Foundations for Your Upper Primary Literacy Block course. Is this course the same?
No. Reading Success in the Upper Primary Years takes a deeper dive into connecting theory and practice than Build the Foundations. You will be extending on what you learned in the previous course.
My school already has programs in place. Can I benefit from this course?
Yes! Reading Success in the Upper Primary Years is not a program. It is a course to help you focus on the important principles and practices of reading instruction.
I have small children. What if I can’t keep up with the program?
There is no keeping up and no falling behind. Teach Alongs are designed to allow you to access the materials in your time and at your own pace.
There seems to be a lot of information. Are you sure I can manage it all?
Of course! If you are hungry to be a better teacher and are committed to getting results for every student, then you will be just fine. Remember, you have access to the Teach Along recordings for two years so you can take it one little bit at a time. You don’t need to implement everything all at once.
Do I need tech skills to participate?
If you can access your email, you have the necessary skills to participate. The site where the Teach Along ‘lives’ is as easy to use as clicking a button. If you have any technical difficulties, just get in touch. You aren’t on your own!
When I join up, will I get immediate access to all the modules?
No. A module is released each week of the Teach Along to give you the opportunity to take things slowly and avoid being overloaded with too much information all at once. However, you will have access to a knowledge library if you would like to learn in between modules.
I am an early career/mid-career/experienced teacher. Is this Teach Along for me?
Yes! Whether you are an early career or experienced teacher there are things to learn from this Teach Along. For newer teachers, I will provide you with easy-to-use lesson templates and resources so that you can focus on teaching your students instead of trying to figure everything else for yourself. For more experienced teachers, you will have the opportunity to revisit many aspects of teaching practice and refine your skills.
Do I get access to the Resource Room through this course?
No, however there will be a special discounted price available for the Resource Room membership for participants in this course.
