Move your team from following the program to understanding the instruction
In 2021, schools came to this course to learn a new way of teaching reading. Since then, most have implemented a phonics program, and many have seen real gains. Despite a whole heap of hard work, results across classrooms are still uneven, and that unevenness usually comes down to how well teachers understand the instruction they're delivering. Programs tell teachers what to teach and when. They rarely explain why a routine is built the way it is, what to watch for when a child is struggling, or how to adjust without losing what makes the routine work. This course builds that understanding, so your program becomes part of a school-wide system of instruction rather than the whole system.
No matter which phonics program you use, Reading Success in the Early Primary Years is for you.
Whether you’re
- A school leader or curriculum coach looking for practical, real-life ways to support your team to develop responsiveness to their students
- A Foundation, Year 1 or Year 2 Teacher

How the Teach Along Works
A Teach Along allows you to learn a little bit, teach a little bit, get some support and refine. You can work at your own pace or follow along with the modules as they are available. Either way, you will be supported by the terrific group of colleagues who are completing the Teach Along with you. Live sessions are delivered via Zoom. Recordings and all course materials are stored on my online platform, enabling you to consume the content in a way that works for you.
Module 1 - High Impact Teaching in an Efficient Literacy Block
Make every minute of your literacy block count. Learn to spot low-impact practices and decide where your time will get the best return.
Module 2 - Oral Language and Phonological Awareness
Weave oral language through every part of your teaching and focus phonological awareness time on the practices that make the biggest difference.
Module 3 - Phonics Instruction that Sticks
Build team knowledge beyond the program and build an instructional system that doesn't leave gaps in student knowledge.
Module 4 - Word Reading and Spelling and Promoting Long-Term Learning
Transfer learning from reading to spelling, and teach morphology so that it contributes to strong literacy foundations rather than being an 'extra' that is quickly forgotten.
Module 5 - High Frequency Words and Sentence-Level Instruction
Teach irregular high-frequency words in a way that connects reading, spelling, and meaning, and leverage a gradual release model to strengthen students' sentence-level writing fluency.
Module 6 - Using and Moving on From Decodable Texts
Understand the role decodables play in building fluency, when to introduce them, and how to know when students are ready to move on.
Because we know that students' needs change across the early years, participants also have access to additional, recorded content specifically for Foundation and Year 1-2 teachers.

By the End of this Teach Along You Will Have:
- Deepened your understanding of the six components of reading instruction, so you can see how each one is (or isn't) covered in your current program
- Understood why each step in your core routines is there, so you teach them with intent and can tell when something isn't working
- Sharpened your use of the explicit teaching model, especially checking for understanding and responding when students aren't there yet
- Reviewed your daily literacy block to make sure time goes where it has the most impact
- Used assessment to pinpoint where each student is in phonological awareness and phonics, and adjusted your teaching in response
- Learned to recognise the common points where early reading instruction stalls, and what to do about them
- Made better decisions about decodable texts, including how to use them well and when students are ready to move beyond them
- Tightened your sentence-level transcription routines so the skills carry over into students' own writing
- Taught irregular high frequency words in a way that connects reading and spelling and removes the need for guessing
- Gained the confidence to work with your team to adapt your program to your students without losing what makes it effective
- You will also have 12-months' access to the Resource Room membership so that you have ready access to supplementary resources to help you tighten your existing practice.
What Past Participants Have Said About This Course
“After a few years teaching Kinder (Foundation), I began to wonder how effective my teaching practices were. Not for the mainstream kids, but whether I was developing skills and knowledge to really help kids at both extremes. The Teach Along has given me confidence and new information to be more aware of the nuances in the teaching of reading that ensure I am reaching all of my students. I feel empowered to keep the momentum going and feel safe in the knowledge that my methods are based on the science of reading.”
Lydia
“The practical nature of this teach along is what sets the teach along apart from the many hours of PD I have self funded over the last few years. The way you simplify things for teachers and encourage us to trial teaching routines with what we have, instead of feeling like we need to run out and buy/laminate new materials all the time was so refreshing.”
Chloe
“The set up of the teach-a-long means I can take this at a pace that is conducive to learning. Small amounts of information is provided as short videos which I can refer back to as I need. This is brilliant!! Thank you for this as a resource I can look back on to help me consolidate what I am learning.
I really appreciate the time and effort you have made to make this all come together - the tech / templates / helpfulness. Love this!

“So I’m busting to share! I’m in a low SEI school and every year without fail I have 5-6 kids that just never get there by the end of the year (PP). Now with the combination of Jocelyn Seamer Education Teach Alongs and other SoR practices I currently only have 2 kids that can not write and read cvc words. Without the change I would still have 5-6, but the can do it with teacher support AND it’s only half way through term 2!”
Suzanne
Foundation Teacher
“I have thoroughly enjoyed this course, so practical and informative!! When I reached the end of module 9 I could honestly say that I had achieved my goals and answered all questions I had written down at the start.”
Dianna
“You made me feel like a professional and helped me to take the pressure off my expectations. I liked the goal setting sessions.
Cecily
It is has just been so encouraging to know that this journey is a new one for Teachers all over Australia. I also really loved how you were constantly reassuring us that there is no such thing as perfection and that to be open to the journey of changing our teaching of reading practice as it relates to the needs of our context.

Frequently Asked Questions
Burning Questions That Others Have Asked About Participating in a Teach Along:
My school already has a phonics program. Can I benefit from this course?
Yes! Reading Success in the Early Primary Years is not a program. It is course (and book) to help you focus on the important principles and practices of early reading instruction.
What if I can’t keep up with the program?
There is no keeping up and no falling behind. Teach Alongs are designed to allow you to access the materials in your time and at your own pace.
Do I need tech skills to participate?
If you can access your email, you have the necessary skills to participate. The site where the Teach Along ‘lives’ is as easy to use as clicking a button. If you have any technical difficulties, just get in touch. You aren’t on your own!
